This morning, one of my fellow Travel Junkie asked for a recommendation for some summer adventures destination ideas:
“I’m going to have 2 weeks in July to do some solo traveling. I’m looking for off-the-beaten path location ideas/recommendations good for solo travelers. I’m fairly well traveled and would like to go somewhere new. Anyone have any ideas of places they absolutely love?”
Needless to say, I have a bunch of ideas for summer destinations, especially when we’re looking to stay off the beaten path. And if, in July, the options are less obvious, it was a great exercise to think about it and choose my five favorites.
Summer adventures in Europe
There was a huge list of countries where this person had already traveled but I’m choosing to ignore it. I don’t believe in the fact that because you’ve been to Rome once, you have seen Italy. So, not knowing the extend of his trips, I’m just going to go with my best advice.
Europe is great in the summer. Of course, you want to avoid the most touristic cities such as Rome or Barcelona. Believe me, been there, done that, it’s hell. But if you’re in the city mood, a capital like Belgrade (above) has a lot to offer. And don’t hesitate to explore the surrounding region. Great wines to be tasted!!!
Another city option with much to experience in its vicinity is Hamburg in Germany. I had the opportunity to co-work there for a week a few years ago and really fell in love with this town.
For a more nature-oriented experience, I will never recommend enough to spend time in the Alps. They’re my happy place and I know for a fact that if you’re into hiking and outdoor sports, they’re a perfect location for summer adventures.
Finally, my last destination of choice in Europe would be the Yorkshire region in Great Britain. England has a bad rep when it comes to weather and the summer months are the best to explore the gorgeous countryside. I absolutely adored Yorkshire, in August, all the heathers are in bloom and the sightseeing is incredible.
Summer adventures in the U.S.
A favorite solo adventure of mine is the road trip I took last summer from San Francisco, CA to Portland, OR. The northern coast of California and southern coast of Oregon are absolutely incredible. Not many people to be in your way, some gorgeous sceneries and if, like me, you like to drive, the roads to explore are endless. You might even be able to drive your car through a tree… Try it, it’s fun!
